hope everyone has had a chance to relax and enjoy some quality time with family and friends over the Holiday Season. The start of school, after a significant break, always provides a good opportunity to re-establish a focus on learning. We are also very thankful for the support that you have given to us and to your child. The partnership between school and home is essential to student achievement and success. Please continue to support your child by reading with them daily, completing homework assignments and talking to your child about the importance of doing their best while at school. Remember that we are less than three weeks away from the end of the 2nd quarter (January 26th) and any time spent doing assignment completion and structured study will pay off in the end for this semester. Please check Powerschool WITH YOUR CHILD and contact your son or daughter’s teacher if you have any questions about their academic progress.
Havel is a great place to be and we are happy to serve you and your child.
Happy New Year!

January 3rd Update-
Good afternoon Havel families and Happy New Year!
With the freezing temperatures I wanted to take a moment and give you a few friendly reminders-
- Board policy states that students will not go outside when the temperature (including the wind chill) is below 10 degrees.
- Michigan weather is quick to change, so as long as we have snow on the ground your child should be coming to school with boots, a hat, and gloves. We will try to get the children outside for recess as much as the weather permits, and just because it’s cold in the morning, doesn’t mean by the afternoon we might be able to enjoy some fresh air. (don’t forget to label all items and consider having a pair of shoes to keep at school instead or bringing back and forth)
- School closings based on temperature or weather are determined at the board office. If school is going to be closed you will be notified via a robo call. It will also be posted on our Facebook page, the UCS website, and the local television stations. (Channels 2, 4, & 7) We are typically not informed in advance of any school closings.
- With the extreme temperatures, it is important that your child is dressed for the weather when waiting at the bus stop. With the snowy roads we can’t predict when a bus may be running late.
Have a wonderful day and stay warm!

We know that Halloween is a very exciting time that many children look forward to each and every year. By working together, we can make Halloween a safe and happy experience for all of our Havel Hawks. When shopping and planning for the perfect Halloween costume with your child, please avoid the following: masks, weaponry (including toys), blood, gore, overly scary costumes, and any character from a rated "R" movie: (ex. Scary Clowns, Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th , Michael Myers from Halloween, the Scream ghost mask, etc) Students whose costumes do not adhere to these guidelines will not be permitted to wear the costume and will have to return home to change into appropriate attire. Thank you in advance for your respect of our preschool through sixth grade student population.
September 29th Update-
TGIF Havel Families and Happy October!
This is such a great time of year with the beautiful Fall colors, cool weather, perhaps a trip to the apple orchard or cider mill, and fun Fall celebrations! For me, the best part about Fall is the fact that our students are fully involved in their learning. I have had the great pleasure of visiting all of our classrooms, and our teachers are creating engaging lessons for our students. Children are using technology to enhance their learning, they are involved in high· level thinking activities, they are working collaboratively with classmates, they are participating in discussions that allow them to demonstrate their learning, and they are creating projects that show a deep knowledge of all subject areas. Our classrooms are very busy, full of learning!
Our Havel staff and HVL were so excited to welcome many new faces to our September meeting! We are looking forward to seeing many parents at our next meeting on October 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Science Room. Free child care will be provided for the evening meeting. We really need your help in order to continue all of the fun and educational programs our volunteer group provides for our students.
Enjoy this wonderful month of October and all of the beauty it brings.

September 22nd Update-
Happy Weekend Havel Families,
The third week of school brought fire drill practice and our very first crew meeting!!!! Crews are mulit-grade groups that will be meeting approximately once a month and will focus on success skills. The following was the message that was given to each group by their teacher. “Today is our first meeting as a crew. Every student in the school is a member of a crew, which is kind of like a family. And just like a family, there are older and younger members. And like a family we work together, learn from each other, help each other, and cheer each other on. Our hope is that you will come to our crew meetings each month and feel like you are a valued member of our school family. We will be playing fun games and learning about important skills to help us become better individuals. Today we are going to start by getting to know each other a little better. You will be getting your name tag that you will wear at each meeting and we will play a little game where you get to tell us something about yourself.”
Our next crew meeting is planned for Friday, October 13th. Each crew will be doing team building activities for part of their session and for the other part they will be tie dyeing their crew shirt. If you have not yet sent in a while t-shirt to your child’s teacher please do so ASAP. We will be in need of parent volunteers for this activity. Please contact the office if you are available at 10:30 or 2:00 on October 13th. (586-797-5200)

This week our 5th and 6th grade classes have begun switching for math, social studies, and science instruction, K-2 have begun the personalized learning and stations as a part of their ELA and Math instruction, and all students have had the opportunity to have Media Center, Gym, Art, & Music instruction.
If you have not turned in all of our beginning of the year paperwork, you must do so immediately. Students without a green health form will not be able to participate in gym class and we need all emergency cards so that we can begin the task of updating all parent contacts in our system.
We started a Remind for Havel Elementary this year, please text @havelele to 81010 to sign up for remind messages. In addition, most classroom teachers have a remind that we are asking you to sign up for. We know how busy our own family schedules are and want to help you stay connected and involved in your child’s education. Please contact your child’s teacher to see if they have a remind classroom account for this school year.
We are in need of lunch supervision. To get more information on this paid position please contact Mrs. Dalka at [email protected] or 586-797-5200.
Our NEHS students are sponsoring a Singing Birthday Telegram for those parents who want to send some birthday fun to their child on their special day. Please see the attached flyer for more information. NHS Singing Telegram.pdf If you have any questions please email Mrs. Kramer at [email protected]
Our Havel Volunteer League will be doing a Pizza Kit fundraiser beginning October 1st. Their next meeting will be October 10th. Look for more information about the Pizza Kits and the Coin War that will be coming out! - Your HVL Board (Don’t forget to like us on Facebook and sign up for our remind updates by texting @ @42b39 to 81010)
Finally we had our first fire drill practice and will continue to practice emergency drills such as fire, tornado, and lockdown procedures throughout the year. I was very proud of how quickly, safely, and quietly our students exited the building! Way to go Havel Hawks!
