The Eisenhower High School Jazz Ensemble has earned a rare invitation to participate in the 2018 Detroit Jazz Festival this Labor Day weekend.

"We have identified your band as one of the premier youth jazz ensembles in the state of Michigan, and we will be proud to feature your students on a main stage at the festival this year," organizers wrote Eisenhower Director of Bands Christopher M. Traskal.

The 24-member band will perform September 4 beginning at 12:30pm on the Absopure Waterfront Stage in Hart Plaza

"This is the 4th year in a row that the Eisenhower Jazz Ensemble has performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival (DJF), and we couldn't be more thrilled to perform yet again!" Traskal said. "It's an honor to represent our school, program and the community at large in this performance."

To qualify, bands had to earn a "1" - or superior rating - at the MSBOA State Jazz Festival and submit an audition CD to festival organizers.

Over the past few years, that band has been awarded accolades that include the following:

  • Best Rhythm Section Class AA at the 43rd annual (2016) Phi Mu Alpha/Central Michigan University Jazz Weekend
  • First Place Outstanding Band at the 44th annual (2017) Phi Mu Alpha/Central Michigan University Jazz Weekend
  • Four Students selected for the 2018 Michigan Youth Arts Jazz Ensemble

Utica Community Schools continues to be named nationally by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) as one of the best communities for music education.
