July 14th Update-

Happy Summer Everyone!!

I hope you have been enjoying the sunshine when we have had it and stayed dry with this crazy rain the last few days.  On July 24th at 5:00 some of the Havel teachers and myself will be at the playground area of Autumn Woods located at Canal and Orchard Lane from 5:00-5:30.

They don’t have an address for the common area, and I am not allowed to give a home address out.  For your GPS the cross roads are Canal and Orchard Lane.  Orchard Lane is located off of Canal just west of Delco.

It's easy to find us once you pull in.  We will be on the left hand side of the complex.  You can see the common area in between Duplexes.

See you soon!!
Ms. Barel

We are doing a "Math Packet Check In" and for all students who have done all of Part 1 of their packet they will get a "cool treat".  If you can't find your packet you can download and print it from our website at :  http://havel.uticak12.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=590442&pageId=5192314

I hope to see many of you there on Monday, July 24th!

**5th Grade Families, your math packet was the workbook that was sent home.  Your 1/2 way point is up to chapter 10!**

Happy Summer!

May 12th Update-

Happy Friday Havel Families,

Below are a few reminders and dates to know!

As your child's first and most important teacher, please remember that sometimes lessons are learned not in what you say but in what you do! So please, always follows the rules while on our campus and in our parking lot. Here are the guidelines to keep all people safe!

Havel Elementary School Parking Lot Safety

The front parking lot is often crowded. In an effort to make the parking lot safer for our students, we are asking all persons coming to drop students off or pick students up observe the following guidelines:
•    When entering or exiting the parking lot, do not drive over cones or other barriers. These are designed to protect students.
•    When leaving the parking lot please do not create a second exit lane.
•    Stay to the far right nearest the curb if you are going to pick-up or drop-off. Do not leave your car parked by the curb. The pick-up/drop-off lane is NO PARKING!
•    Do not stop in the bus lane of the parking lot. This is for bus traffic only.
•    Do not leave your vehicle unattended unless parked in a designated parking spot.  Especially in an undesignated parking spot or our bus lane.
•    Do not park in handicap spaces without proper decal.

Weather permitting, if you are a “walker”, consider parking in the subdivisions and utilizing the sidewalk and the catwalk behind Havel to help alleviate congestion in the parking lot.

Once we have all 300+ students on the busses and begin to stop traffic so they can exit do not attempt to merge into the exit lane until the last bus has looped through.  If you are in the exit lane, please do not allow others to merge. I know schedules are tight and people are bust but at no time should we compromise safety for schedules.

Thank you for taking time to review these guidelines. We appreciate your support in helping keep all students and staff safe at Havel Elementary.

I want to share with you again what our placement process looks like for the 2017-2018 school year.  In late spring I will meet with each grade level and support staff.  Together we will discuss each child, his/her unique learning style and needs.  We then take great care to create “learning communities” to ensure we have balanced classrooms in terms of learning style, gender, behaviors, etc.  We will place each child into a learning community in which he/she will be most successful.  Each learning community will then be placed with a grade level teacher.  Please note that the teachers nor I will be taking specific teacher requests for the 2017-2018 school year.  Our staff works diligently as a team to create optimal learning communities.  You can anticipate finding out who your child’s teacher is in late August via email.

Have a wonderful weekend!

March 31st Update-

Dear Havel Families,

As our final marking period begins, please continue to encourage your child to do their personal best.  The warmer weather can make it difficult to concentrate on school.  Remind your child that the last ten weeks are very instrumental in preparing him/her for next year.  Spring fever should not keep them from being successful!!

I would like to thank all of the parents/guardians that are following our parking lot guidelines.  I had a teacher on stop sign duty at the crosswalk get brushed by a car that did not adhere to the safety guidelines as she looked to escort children across.  I realize that at times it is difficult to find a proper place to park, that at times schedules are tight, and that you may need to leave the school in a hurry.  However, please keep in mind that safety measures are in place to ensure safe arrival and dismal for all students and adults at Havel.

Have a great spring break!

January 22nd Hawk Update-

Havel Families,

Monday marks the beginning of the 3rd quarter for our 2016-2017 school year.  2nd quarter conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, February 7th.  If your child’s teacher feels that a conference is necessary they will be sending home a request this Monday, January 23rd.  3rd-6th grade families, be sure to check PowerSchool on a regular basis for updated grades and assignments.

Below are a few friendly reminders-

Parking Lot at Dismissal-

During dismissal it is very helpful if, once I have asked the staff to send the busses, for cars to allow them to proceed.  This means to please be patient and let the busses exit without trying to squeeze in between them or allow other cars in the exit line. Thank you for helping me ensure a safe dismissal at the end of the day!

Students should keep all toys at home – they cause distraction and upset when they become lost or damaged. During recess we encourage children to play games, or use the playground equipment with friends. Thank you for your help with this!

The majority of our classrooms schedule a snack time throughout the school day. The intent is to provide a quick and healthy nourishment for the brain to do its best work. Please do not send in candy, cookies, desserts or beverages other than water for snack. These items should be saved for the lunchbox and are not for classroom snack.

LOST & FOUND

Our lost and found is filling quickly. Please remind your child that the lost and found is located in our back hallway - your child can check in during lunch for any missing items.

Have a wonderful day!

January 5th Hawk Update-

Havel Families,

I can’t believe it’s 2017, the beginning of a New Year! It’s a great time to reflect on the many successes we experienced this past year. It is also a time to consider how to make changes in areas where we would like to grow. Here are some tips to help students start the New Year off on a positive note.

Have your child attend school everyday ON TIME. During the first minutes of the day routines are established and learning can start right away. We know that when students are at school, their academic growth is significantly improved.

  • Get plenty of sleep.  Scientists have shown that those students who do not get enough sleep have difficulty paying attention in class and do not do as well in school.
  • Eat healthy.  Eat more fruits and vegetables and be sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.
  • Treat others the way you want to be treated.
  • Take time to carefully complete all assignments at school and home; ask questions when you do not understand a task; demonstrate perseverance (that means keep trying even when the work is difficult), and eliminate the word “can’t” from your vocabulary.   Instead I challenge you to add the word YET to those common statements such as I can’t do this math problem, yet.  I don’t understand this question, yet.  I can’t do this homework, yet.  There is so much power of the word YET!!

This January, Havel is offering parents two easy ways to electronically access your student’s semester grades through a secure system.  These options will allow parents to view semester grades and attendance as soon as the information becomes available:

  • PowerSchool - PowerSchool allows you to view semester grades and attendance. Parents who do not have access to a PowerSchool account will need to register for one prior to the end of the marking period. The report cards will be automatically e-mailed to the address that is used to register the PowerSchool account.

  • SchoolMessenger - As an added featured, the system we use to communicate with you through automated e-mails and phone messages also provides parents a secure way to manage and receive information.  This registration process will also allow you to set your preferred method of notifications for emergencies and school notices. Parents must first have a PowerSchool account to register for this system.

Our school will no longer automatically print and mail report cards to parents. Printed report cards will be available by requesting one from our school office.

More information on how to register for secure accounts is available through the “My Havel” tab under the quick links tab for parents or by going directly to http://uticak12.org/studentinfocenter

Happy New Year,

December 17th Hawk Update-

Havel Families-

With the winter weather in full swing and late bus arrivals, it is very important that we keep the bus lanes clear of cars.  If you are dropping your child off please park and walk them in, or follow the “kiss and go” drop off line in the back of the building.  Students should be ready to hop out of the car in order to keep the flow of traffic moving.

Last Friday we completed the first five weeks of the second quarter.  Grades will be up to date for the 'progress report' by next Thursday, December 22nd.  Please be sure to check PowerSchool to see what your child’s academic grades are as printed copies of progress reports will not be sent home.  Contact the main office at 797-5200 if you need assistance with PowerSchool login/password information.

Additionally, this January, Havel is offering parents two easy ways to electronically access your student’s semester grades through a secure system.  These options will allow parents to view semester grades and attendance as soon as the information becomes available:

  • PowerSchool - PowerSchool allows you to view semester grades and attendance. December 10th Hawk Update-
WOW!!  I am in awe and humbled of the support that our community showed for our Turkey Trot fundraiser!  We raised over $16,000.00 to support curriculum and instruction here at Havel.  We will be purchasing bubble soccer for our physical education curriculum, 3D goggles to support our science inquiry and instruction, iPod touches to support 3D science instruction, stools for some of our lower elementary students to use as alternative seating, professional development opportunities for staff to participate in and more!

I am planning on working from the roof on Monday in my turkey costume, as I promised our students I would if we met our goal!  They all know I HATE the cold (I’ve told them this over and over the closer we got to the goal!) but am proud of their hard work and look forward to greeting them on Monday from the top of Havel!

Thank you again for your support of our students, teachers, and curriculum instruction here at Havel.  I am proud to be a Havel Hawk and a part of this outstanding learning community.

A few notes-

UCS Policy is that students will go outside for recess unless the temperature (including wind chill) is below 10 degrees.  Please make sure your child comes to school dressed to be outside every day.  This includes a winter coat, boots, hat, and gloves.  There is no guarantee that the play pad will be cleared of any snow/slush prior to recess so boots are a must!  You may want to consider having an extra pair of socks in your child’s backpack in case their feet get wet.

If you child is interested in being on science Olympiad please email Ms. Garcia at lisa.garcia@uticak12.org

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms. Barel

December is almost here! Cooler temperatures… disappearing daylight. The upcoming weeks can become quite overwhelming as families prepare for family gatherings, special travels, and perhaps some shopping outings in preparation for special traditions. As much as we’d all like to feel that we are organized and well-prepared for the upcoming weeks, each family deals with the stress of the holidays in different ways. Oftentimes, children have later bedtimes, hectic trips to the store for that last item, and sometimes experience first-hand the financial stress that plagues many families during this time of the year. Routines often fall to the wayside along with daily reading practices, consistent homework support, and even family meals. At times families need to make a concerted effort to see that the rush and stresses of the holiday season do not seep into their child’s daily routine and need for consistency.

In a time where the hope for a peaceful and tranquil holiday season is sought and the act of giving is contagious, our student groups offer a variety of opportunities to give back. Our Academically Talented and Gifted program will be is doing a donation drive of paper products for Turning Point. Our drive will run from 11/30-12/19.  Any donation of toilet paper, paper towel, Kleenex, napkins, paper plates and plastic silverware will be greatly appreciated.

Havel will be working with the Kiwanis Club, and Toys for Tots program sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps.

We will be collecting the following items:

·             Non-perishable food items for the needy

·             New, unopened toys for the Toys for Tots program.

All food items and toys must be received by Wednesday, December 14.

Thank you for helping our students learn about giving to others during this holiday time. Your donations are greatly appreciated.

Turkey Trot Update-

Dear Havel Families,

Our Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, November 15th and Thursday, November 17th. This is another opportunity to meet with your teacher and find out how your child is progressing both academically and socially this year. It is extremely important for you to spend time with your child’s teacher to discuss his/her progress and see how you may help your child at home. One of the best ways to do this is to utilize the PowerSchool App on your smart phone.  I have talked with each classroom about the importance of the student's checking their grades and after this round of conferences each parent will have received the parent portal log in information for PowerSchool.  We will no longer be sending home progress reports midway through the quarter, so log in and make sure you have your user name and password set and ready to go.  If you would like to download the Powerschool app on your phone the district code is NKDJ.

Below are some helpful hints for conferences:

Before the conference:

o Make a list of things to tell your child’s teacher

o Make a list of questions to ask the teacher

During the conference:

o Please be on time and be understanding of our need to meet with each parent

o Start the conference with a positive note

o Listen carefully and discuss any questions and concerns you may have about your child’s academic and social progress

After the Conference:

o Discuss the conference with your child

o Stress the good things the teacher said and talk about the suggestions made for improvement

Our primary goal is to meet with each child’s parents during the conference window. We look forward to seeing you!

Email Update- October 7th, 2016

Dear Havel Community,

We are already in our second month of school! We have practiced fire drills, taken the NWEA assessment, jumped into our core grade level content standards, introduced our students to a few visible thinking routines, held our open house, had our summer challenge bounce house reward, and much more!! I want to thank parents for attending our Open House. It was great to see how much our community supports our school.

Havel will host a Destination Imagination meeting Thursday, October 13th at 6:00 pm in the media center.  Destination Imagination (DI) is a co-curricular competition where students (k-6) use creative problem solving and team work to solve different challenges.

As we enter October we get to enjoy cooler temperatures and of course Halloween! I know students love the whole Halloween process – I’ve heard many conversations about what costumes children are picking out! We don’t want our youngest students frightened by gory or scary costumes. Those should absolutely be avoided.

All of us at Havel work diligently to teach children how to solve problems in a non-violent way. We do not want to see children dressed as perpetrators or victims of violence. This includes props and accessories related to blood, gore, and weapons. Parent, please monitor your child’s costume choices: Students wearing this type of costume will not be permitted to participate in the days events.

On the morning of October 31st (parade day), changing rooms and time to dress will be limited, so minimally-complicated costumes should be considered.  Students are able to wear their costumes to school.  Also, please remember that we have a half day on October 31. Classes have great activities planned and an outdoor parade at 10:30, weather permitting. I will be opening the gates so parents can park in the back.

Wanted: Halloween candy

Finally, we are collecting extra Halloween candy to contribute to various charities. Donation boxes will be available outside the office. Thanks for all your help.

Happy October,

Kristina Barel

Proud Principal

Email Update- September 15th, 2016

Hello Havel Hawks,

Week two is under our belts and students are into the routine and expectations of the classrooms.  I would like to thank everyone who was able to make our Open House on Tuesday.  I cannot stress the importance of a strong parent/home/school connection that correlates to our students’ individual success.  If you were unable to make the classroom presentation portion of the meeting, you should contact your child’s teacher directly to see what information you may have missed.

Technology Resources-

Phone Apps- Be sure to download the Utica Community Schools App in addition to the Powerschool App on your smart phone.  The UCS app will help you stay up to date with district information and give you quick access to our Havel website/updates.  The Powerschool App will allow you to see your child’s grades and attendance.  As the parent of a 7th and 6th grader I want to recommend that if your child has their own smart phone or tablet you download the app and have them check it on a weekly basis.  This gives them ownership for their scores and accountability, which are lifelong skills that we want all of our students to have.  If you need help, please let me know!

Website- Our Havel website has been redesigned by the district and is available at:   http://havel.uticak12.org/

Social Media- Like our FB page for pictures, reminders, and district information- https://www.facebook.com/HavelElementary/

Email Update- September 11th, 2016

Hello Havel families,

What a successful and busy first week here at Havel!  I’d like to thank everyone for their generous classroom donations, kind words, enthusiasm, and support as we kicked off the 2016-2017 school year.  As I walked around the building this week it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and to meet our new students.

Below are just a few things to take note of-

  • This Tuesday, September 13th is our Open House at 6:00 with classroom sessions beginning aprox at 6:30.  See you there!
  • Many classrooms have had the opportunity to experience the Making Thinking Visible routine of Headlines or ChalkTalk.  Ask your child if they have done either of these in their classroom.
  • Smartphone users be sure to download the Utica Community Schools App to stay up to date on district information such as lunch menus along with having access to our website right from your phone.
  • Be sure to like our Havel Elementary Facebook page!  We post pictures of our students in the classroom, special activities, and post reminders about upcoming events.  https://www.facebook.com/HavelElementary/

  • If you need to contact any of our staff members, please follow this link for our Havel Elementary staff page.  Just click on the name of the person you wish to message and you can email them directly.  http://havel.uticak12.org/havel_staff

Email Update- September 3rd, 2016

Hello Havel Hawks!

I hope you all had a fun and relaxing summer.  It was awesome to see our returning students and to meet new students during the meet and greet. Our Havel staff is excited to get the 2016-2017 school year underway!  We are looking forward to welcoming our students for the first day of school on Tuesday, September 6th.

Some reminders about the first day:

  • Half DAY (9:00-12:04)

As both principal and parent, I ask for your help with the following safety/procedural issues:

  • Students may enter the building at 8:50 am
  • Drop students off in the back of the building as in years past – please do not park and have them walk through the parking lot as they may not be seen by drivers
  • The back gate will be open for parking on the playpad, please do not park in an undesignated parking spot
  • Avoid stopping/parking directly in front of the main entrance as that area is needed for our busses.  This is a no parking/stopping/student drop off zone.
  • Practice parking lot courtesy  and bring your patience – we are all in a hurry, but in order to maintain the safety of  children, we must be calm and observant behind the wheel
  • Plan ahead how you will handle forgotten items such as lunches –  let your child know to stop by the main office to check the ‘Drop Off Bookshelf’ for items
  • Monitor the clothes your child wears – in particular, short skirts and shorts, ripped and/or tight items

Odds and Ends

  • If your child participated in the summer learning challenge please turn their packet/work into their classroom teacher.
  • Be sure to fill out and return all forms by Friday, September 9th.
  • Mark your calendar for our open house on Tuesday, September 13th at 6:00.
  • Bus routes/numbers are posted on our main doors and can be found by downloading the Utica Community Schools app on your smart phone.
  • If you are in need of your child's PowerSchool log in and password you must present identification, fill out a district required form, and turn it into the office.  We will have those forms available Tuesday morning.
  • If you were unable to log into PowerSchool or did not receive the district email and do not know who your child’s teacher is, our learning center team will be right outside the main doors on Tuesday morning to assist you beginning at 8:45 am.

I would like to apologize for those of you who receive my emails but for some reasons did not get the email stating who your child's teacher was.  That email was generated from UCS central office and as with anything new, we are looking into possible solutions as we move forward.  Tuesday your child will be receiving a copy of the emergency contacts and information that we have on file in the office.  Be sure to make any corrections (including email) and return it to the office ASAP.  We will work on updating our 570 students information as quickly as possible.

In addition to our new students, we are pleased to have the following staff join our Havel team:

  • Mrs. Carly Pacioni-Tomasak- 1st Grade
  • Mrs. Michele DeHaan- Kindergarten
  • Ms. Martha Dolenga- Learning Center
  • Ms. Marlene Mears- English Language Teacher
  •
  •

With your support, it’s going to be a fantastic school year.

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

Kristina Barel

Dear Havel Families,

On behalf of the entire Havel Staff, I am happy to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year!  We look forward to working together to help our students meet the challenges they will face as they live and work in the 21st century. The Havel Elementary Staff has been extremely busy this summer, not only with routine procedures, but also preparing for the many new faces we will welcome to our family this year. As a staff, we have been working diligently to ensure a successful school year, and our school-wide theme this year will help us demonstrate that we are “One World, Many Heroes”.

Please take time to read and review the enclosed information regarding the start of school, as you will find many of your questions answered.  Back To School Information  One very effective means to communicate to our families is through email.  Please be certain that your email address is up to date, so that you can receive valuable and timely school information.  We also have a Facebook page that is updated frequently, so be sure to “like” Havel Elementary to see what is happening around the building.

  • School begins on Tuesday, September 6th for grades K-6.  All students will be dismissed at 12:04 p.m. on that day.  Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will be full days, with school in session from 9:00 a.m.  – 3:50 p.m.  A suggested supply list can be found by clicking here:  2016-2017 Supply List
  •

This year, we are changing the way we communicate classroom assignments for our students. To provide this information to you in a more convenient and secure manner, we will be e-mailing the classroom assignment to you directly using the e-mail addresses on file.  The assignment will also be shared through the PowerSchool parent portal and through a customized app that will be available through Utica Community Schools (the app will be available to download beginning August 22). We will no longer be posting entire classroom lists on the doors of our school.

The assignments will be e-mailed to all parents on Wednesday, August 31. Beginning on Thursday, September 1 the information will be available on PowerSchool and the district’s customized App. If your e-mail address has changed over the past few months, please contact the school office.   The PowerSchool ParentPortal will open to parents on Thursday, September 1st.   On that date, parents will have the opportunity to view their student’s teacher assignment for the year, as well as attendance and grades throughout the school year.

Parents and students with existing IDs and passwords can continue to use those IDs and passwords from last school year. Parents/students new to the district will need the access ID and access password for each student.  If you do not have a Powerschool ID/Password Utica Community Schools requires parents to come to the office, show picture ID, and sign for the personal information.  Our office is open from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. to assist you.

You can access the Parent Portal by navigating to the URL below:

  http://uticak12.org/parentportalinfo

Look for the Parent Portal link at the bottom of the web page (if you already have an account and password), or the Parent Portal Account Set-up Quick Reference link (if you need to set up an account/password).

The school will be open for a classroom “sneak peek” from 4:00-5:30 p.m. on August 31st.  I hope to see you there, as this will allow students the chance to become acquainted with the school and classrooms so that their first day of the new school year will run smoothly.   Our Havel Volunteer League is hosting a snow cone social on this day also.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.  Snow Cone Social

Our Havel School Age Child Care program (SACC) will be in session before school on Tuesday morning, September 6, from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and after school from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.  Normal hours for SACC for a full school day are 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and 3:50 p.m. until 6:00 p.mIf you have not yet registered, open registration will take place on August 30th & 31st at Havel from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm both days.  You can also register at the Walsh building 8:00 am – 4:00 pm daily.  Pre-registration is required for your child to attend this program.  SACC Registration Packet

I hope that the enclosed information is helpful to you.  If you require further information or have any questions, please feel free to contact the school office at 586-797-5200.  Throughout the year, look for my bi-weekly emails and our monthly newsletter, Havel Hawk Line.  This newsletter is designed as one tool to keep you aware of what is happening here at Havel.

As a part of the Utica Community Schools, we hold high expectations regarding the success and achievement of all our students.  Our staff strives to provide the most positive educational climate possible for academic growth. Don’t hesitate to stop in or call if you have a question, concern, or would like to support any of the activities planned for this year.  By working together as a team, we can make this school year a very successful one for your child.  I am looking forward to partnering with you for a successful school year!

Your Proud Principal,

Kristina Barel
